Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:47 am

James LeVoy Sorenson (1922-) is the founder of Sorenson Companies, a parent company of 32 corporations. A noted philanthropist, he is currently the richest man in Utah and 50th in the U.S., according to Forbes World’s Richest People. Sorenson holds roughly 60 patents, and is credited with a number of medical inventions including the disposable surgical mask and the disposable venous catheter. One of his companies, Sorenson Genomics, has also begun a genetic database known as the Molecular Genealogy Research Project, and claims to be the only laboratory in the world to have successfully identified victims of the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

In 2003, Sorenson was honored as the “Alumnus of the Year” by Sierra College in Rocklin, California, which he attended from 1940 to 1941. His pre-med studies were interrupted by World War II and a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints mission.

SCSI Log Sense Command values

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:16 pm

The SCSI Log Sense command is used to obtain current data from log pages in a SCSI target device. The CDB structure for the Log Sense command is:

The special parameter fields in the CDB have the following meaning:

  • PPC - Parameter Pointer Control - if this is one then the target returns a log page with parameter code values which have changed since the last Log Select command or Log Sense command. If PPC is zero then all bytes are returned.
  • SP - Save Parameters - if this is one then the target should save all saveable log parameters to a non-volatile memory or media area.
  • PC - Page Control - this indicates which type of values should be returned:

    • 00 - Current Threshold Values
    • 01 - Current Cumulative Values
    • 10 - Default Threshold Values
    • 11 - Default Cumulative Values
  • Parameter Pointer indicates the first parameter code to be returned.
  • Allocation Length in bytes

If the Parameter Pointer is zero and the PPC is zero and the Allocation Length is high enough then all parameters are returned.

Strophoid Base curve

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:42 am

A strophoid, also known as a logocyclic curve or a foliate, is a cubic curve generated by increasing or diminishing the radius vector of a variable point Q on a straight line AB by the distance QC of the point from the foot of the perpendicular drawn from the origin to the fixed line.

The polar equation is

<math>r=a\ \cos2\theta/\cos\theta</math>.

The Cartesian equation is

<math>y^2 = x^2(a-x)/(a+x)</math>,

where a is the distance of the line from the origin. The curve resembles the Folium of Descartes, and has a node between x = 0, x = a, and two branches asymptotic to the line x = −a.
The curve has two more asymptotes, in the plane with complex coordinates, given by

<math>x\pm iy = -a</math>.

A curve: <math>r=a\ \sin(\alpha-2\theta) / \sin(\alpha-\theta)</math>

Limerick Lake in Limerick Republic

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:43 am

Limerick Lake in Ontario Canada is an approx. 8.3 km² lake, near Limerick Township, Ontario. In 1937, the building of St. Ola Dam raised the level of Big Salmon Lake by two meters. The lake was then renamed, as part of a process in Ontario to give each large lake a unique name.

Limerick Lake has between 5 to 10 full-year residents and another approx. 200 seasonal residents who visit mainly in the summer months from June to September. Limerick Lake is typically frozen over from late November to Late April each year and supports several winter activities such as snowmobiling, cross country skiing, dogsledding, and snowshoe hiking. The area is heavily forested, as is the shoreline of the lake, the main local industry being forestry and logging.

The lake’s dimensions are 8.29 km² (2,050 acres); average depth: 10 meters (32 ft); maximum depth: 30 meters (96 ft); elevation: 332 meters (1,080 ft) above mean sea level. The average summer water temperature in July and August reaches 27 °C (80 °F) and the fish contains the following species of fish: Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Rock Bass, Lake Trout, Bluegill.

Curve of pursuit curves are

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:07 pm

A curve of pursuit is a curve constructed by analogy to having a point or points which represents pursuers and pursuees, and the curve of pursuit is the curve traced by the pursuers.

With the paths of the pursuer and pursuee parametrised in time, the pursuee is always on the pursuer’s tangent. That is, given F(t) the pursuer (follower) and L(t) the pursuee (leader), there is for every t with F′(t) ≠ 0 an x such that

<math>L(t)=F(t)+xF^\prime(t).</math>

Typical drawings of curves of pursuit have each point acting as both pursuer and pursuee, inside a polygon, and having each pursuer pursue the adjacent point on the polygon.

The curve was highlighted in the season 3 premier of the American TV show Numb3rs.

Lloyd’s mirror ACUVUE Contact Lenses

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:04 pm

Lloyd’s mirror is a classic optics experiment and was first described in 1834. Place a converging lens about 10cm in front of a diverging lens. Shine a laser into both. Place a screen about three meters from the laser and adjust the position of the two lenses so that the smallest possible spot can be seen on the screen. Lay a microscope slide between the two lenses. Carefully raise the slide until the laser beam just grazes its upper surface. A second spot will appear on the screen, about one inch above the first. Remove the converging lens without disturbing the other apparatus. With this lens removed, the cones of light coming from the direct and reflected sources partially overlap, forming an interference pattern on the screen.

This interference pattern was also used with radio telescopes located along the Australian coastline, using the sea instead of the microscope slide in the optical experiment. This allowed the first interferometric measurements of astronomical objects.

Fleischer ring cornea in

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:00 am

Fleischer rings are pigmented rings in the peripheral cornea, resulting from iron deposition in basal epithelial cells. They are usually yellowish to dark-brown, and may be complete or broken.

Fleischer rings are indicative of keratoconus, a degenerative corneal condition that causes the cornea to thin and change to a conic shape.

Confusion with Kayser-Fleischer rings

Some confusion exists between Fleischer rings and Kayser-Fleischer rings. Kayser-Fleischer rings are caused by copper deposits, and are indicative of Wilson’s disease, whereas Fleischer rings are caused by iron deposits.

System of record Information about all ACUVUE

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:23 pm

A system of record is an information storage system (commonly implemented on a computer system), which is the authoritative data source for a given data element or piece of information. The need to identify systems of record can become acute in organizations where management information systems have been built by taking output data from multiple source systems, re-processing this data, and then re-presenting the result for a new business use.

In these cases, multiple information systems may disagree about the same piece of information. These disagreements may stem from semantic differences, differences in the timing of the ETL extracts that create the data they report against, or may simply be the result of bugs.

Where the integrity of the data is vital, a data element must either be linked to, or extracted directly from its system of record. The integrity and validity of any data set is open to question when there is no traceable connection with a known System of Record.
